Health Care Rankings

Saturday, July 28, 2007

With our country in dire need of health care reform and the implementation of a universal health care system there will be some people spreading much misinformation in order to keep the system as is. Those people are bought and paid for by the health insurance industry and this includes many politicians. People who speak out against universal health care are either lying or ignorant.

Below you'll find the most up to date world wide health care rankings by the World Health Organization. Consider that every country on this list except for the United States has a universal health care system. Think of this list the next time you hear someone lying: Rudy Giuliani Lies About Health Care.

1. France
2. Italy
3. San Marino
4. Andorra
5. Malta
6. Singapore
7. Spain
8. Oman
9. Austria
10. Japan
11. Norway
12. Portugal
13. Monaco
14. Greece
15. Iceland
16. Luxembourg
17. Netherlands
18. United Kingdom
19. Ireland
20. Switzerland
21. Belgium
22. Colombia
23. Sweden
24. Cyprus
25. Germany
26. Saudi Arabia
27. United Arab Emirates
28. Israel
29. Morocco
30. Canada
31. Finland
32. Australia
33. Chile
34. Denmark
35. Dominica
36. Costa Rica
37. USA

Also consider that the US spends by far the most money per person on health care of any of these countries. Why are we getting so little return on so much money spent? Because of the corrupt system we have in place which benefits the very rich health insurance companies and their investors but not the people of this country.

It's obviously well past time for a change. We cannot afford to support any presidential candidate who does not have a true single payer universal health care system ready to go. Right now Dennis Kucinich has the best plan of any of the candidates. Read about Kucinich's health care plan.

The assertion that all those who speak out against this bill are 1) "spreading much misinformation", 2) "bought and paid for by the health insurance industry", 3) "lying", 4) "ignorant" is completely ridiculous.

To address points 1) and 4) at the same time: I am neither ignorant nor spreading misinformation. I have facts and references for the arguments I make. I note that this list has a vague reference to the WHO findings, but no link for people to research and critique the WHO rankings of healthcare. I want to know how those rankings were established. I for one don't trust the WHO. The health of people is not always the first and foremost concern of the WHO ironically enought. Referencing the WHO change on their status towards DDT. After 50,000,000 preventable deaths WHO has reversed its stand on DDT and endoresed its widespread use. (finally, what took so long for common sense to come into play)

Oh, here is one of those links I was talking about for those who really like to learn:

On to point #3: I am not bought and paid for by any health insurance company. I actually pay them for coverage.

Point #4: I am not ignorant. I have spent many, many, many hours researching this topic from multiple perspectives. While our current system has flaws, the proposed legislation is not the solution. It has more flaws than our current system. Want to reassess the the WHO findings using statements from one of Britian's own politicians? Follow this link and watch the series of videos of Daniel Hannan where he addresses the topic of the pros and cons of public single payer systems vs. the exisiting American system:

More info for true learners:
The data reference in this post comes from "Annex Table 1" which has an overall ranking on the far right of the table.

The problem is that some of these factors used to establish the data from this table are the related to the health status of the people in the country itself not its health care. This includes a reflection of the choices the people make not to live healthy lifestyles.

The funny thing is you look at Table 6 and "seven elements of Responsiveness" namely "dignity, autonomy and confidentiality (jointly termed respect of persons), and prompt attention, quality of basic amenities, access to social support networks during care and choice of care provider"

In this regard, we, the United States of America rank #1.

Again for true learners, here are links to the report they quote.

Additionally, as opposed to this antiquated WHO report published in 2000 (and consequently never published since then) if you would like to check out how the French (#1 on this list) system is currently doing .... let's fast forward to 2009. Read the following article to see how terrifically this system is functioning today.
