Republican Jim Gilmore drops out of the race

Sunday, July 15, 2007

Jim Gilmore, former Republican Governor of Virginia, dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination today. He became the first candidate to drop out in either party. There are still 9 candidates left in the Republican field (not counting Fred Thompson who many think will enter the race.)

Gilmore wasn't making a dent in the polls and was having little success with fund raising.

Gilmore on why he dropped out of the race:

“I have come to believe that it takes more than a positive vision for our nation’s future to successfully compete for the Presidency, I believe that it takes years of preparation to put in place both the political and financial infrastructure to contest what now amounts to a one-day national primary in February.”

He's referring to February 5th. Many states have already moved their primary up to February 5th and many others are considering doing so.
