56% of Californians Support Marijuana Legalization

According to this new Survey USA poll 56% of adults in California support marijuana legalization (compared to 42% against.) This November marijuana legalization will be on the ballot in California. This is very encouraging news for those of us who support marijuana legalization (as I certainly do) as this poll indicates that legalization is likely to win in California (as long as supporters actually get registered to vote and make it out to vote on November 2nd!)

And hopefully once marijuana is legalized in California and people find out it’s not that big of a deal (and that it helps raise a lot of money for the state) it will spread to states all around the country until eventually it is legalized at a federal level.

What I found most encouraging about these poll results is the overwhelming support among those in the 18 to 34 demographic. 74% of those in this youngest demo support legalization which means that even if it does fail this November it is really only a matter of time.

  1. Another interesting data point on that poll is that the highest support for legalization doesn’t come from Democratic Party (59%) members from from Independents (62%.) Maybe being a Democratic candidate coming out as pro legalization would actually help his election chances by getting more independent support (of course the risk is he would turn off some conservative Democrats… I guess it depends on how strongly against it they are.)

I was also surprised by how high support is among Republicans (46%.) Only a 13% point difference between D’s and R’s… surprising to me.
