Democrats Dominate Young Voters
By ThePresidentialCandidates.US on Apr 29, 2008 in Barack Obama, John McCain
According to this story over at Donkephant, 58% of 18 to 29 year olds identify themselves as Republicans while only 33% identify themselves as Republicans.
How much of this is a reaction to the monumental failure of the George W. Bush presidency? Well in 2000 the numbers were 49% Democrat/41% Republican. But even even prior to Bush taking office the Democrats were trending up. In 1992 the numbers were 47% Republican and 46% Democrat!
But perhaps the most encouraging thing for Democrats this election cycle is that in 2004 (when John Kerry narrowly lost to George W. Bush) the disparity was just 11% points (51% to 40%) and this year it is 25% points (58% to 33%) — When adding Barack Obama’s huge young voter appeal (which will likely draw some young Republicans as well as almost nearly 100% of young Democrats) compared to McCain’s complete lack of youth appeal and we could be seeing an enormous advantage among 18 to 29 year olds this November for Obama. The question may be if McCain can make up for it with a similar advantage among senior citizens. From here it seems highly unlikely.
