Good News For Health Care Reform

For many months the Obama administration and the Democratic majority in the House & Senate have been trying to negotiate a bipartisan health care reform bill with the Republicans. Unfortunately the Republicans have shown time and time again they have no interest in fixing America’s health care system and seem intent instead on destroying health care reform by chipping away at the health care bill until it is meaningless (and saying they will vote against it anyway) while helping the health insurance industry spread misinformation about what the Democrats are trying to achieve with health care reform.

Finally it looks as if there may be a light at the end of this tunnel for health care reform, according to this story in the NY Times the Obama administration and Democrats in congress are ready to “go it alone” in order to actually get something done instead of continuing the impossible task of negotiating with the “Party of No.”

Bipartisanship is a nice idea in theory but it simply does not work when one of the two parties has no interest in actually negotiating in anything even resembling an honest way. Much more important than bipartisanship is improving the broken health care system of the United States which currently ranks #37 in the world in health care outcomes and #50 in the world in life expectancy despite the fact that we pay more for health care than any other nation in the world.

The Republicans have done nothing but spread lies (ie: “Death Panels,” funding for abortions, health care for illegal immigrants. Go here for a “reality check” on those right wing extremist lies.) It’s time they are treated with the same respect they treat the American people with: NONE. The party of “No” needs to grow up if they want to be involved with something as serious as health care reform.

Now more than ever those of you who know this country needs serious health care reform (including “The Public Option”) need to do what you can to show your support. This campaign for health care reform is just as important as the campaign for President last year. If you campaigned for Obama in 2008, campaign for health care reform in 2009!
