Harry S. Truman – Democrat.
Truman was the 33rd president of the United States. He served from 1945 to 1953.
He became President in 1945 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt died. He had been elected vice president under Roosevelt in 1944 when he won a record 4th term as president.
Truman won a second term in 1948. He defeated Republican Thomas Dewey in what was seen as a huge upset victory. Dewey was favored to win overwhelmingly. Dewey was even erroneously announced the victor in major newspapers such as the Chicago Daily Tribune which Truman famously held up in the picture below:
