John Edwards Quits!

John Edwards stopped his campaign for president today. This is huge news not so much because Edwards had a good shot at winning (he didn’t) but because he does have substantial support (he is polling around 13% nationally) and because he’s made this announcement with plenty of time to go before Super Tuesday on February 5th.

Who is most happy with today’s announcement? I think it has to be the Barack Obama campaign. While Edwards said he is not endorsing anyone at this time, Obama is almost certainly the second choice for the great majority of Edwards supporters and now with Edwards out, many of those supporters will move directly to the Obama camp.

There are rumors that Obama would select Edwards as his VP running mate if he becomes the nominee or as Attorney General if he becomes President.
