Ron Paul: "Fox News Is Scared Of Me"

Saturday, December 29, 2007

Ron Paul says that Fox News is scared of him and that is why he is being excluded from their 1/6/08 Republican debate.

Paul said the following of the controversial "news" channel: "They are propagandists for this war and I challenge them on the notion that they are conservative."

Fox News Censoring Ron Paul?

Saturday, December 29, 2007

According to AP reports Fox News is planning on excluding Ron Paul from their January 6th Republican debate.

Considering that Ron Paul has shown a huge amount of support by raising $6 million in just one day (12/16/07) and that he is polling higher than Fred Thompson (who is being invited) in New Hampshire there is no reasonable explanation for Fox's exclusion of Ron Paul other than censorship. In the latest USA Today/Gallup poll Paul has more than twice the support of Fred Thompson and is in a dead heat tie with Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani.

This is a great example of the corporate interests in this country trying to decide who the next president of the United States is. Why should they get to decide who we are allowed to vote for? Who is a "serious" candidate? Why should only the candidates who are bought & sold by corporations be up for consideration?

A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for freedom and democracy. Do you want your country back?

Until Ron Paul is invited to the January 6 debate we propose a boycott & protest of Fox News. Send emails and letters to Fox News and their advertisers letting them know you are unhappy with this censorship, this thinly veiled attempt at controlling the democratic process in America.

US Soldier Spreading The Word About Ron Paul

Saturday, December 29, 2007

Among Ron Paul's biggest supporters are the men and women in uniform in Iraq. They want a commander in chief who knows how to use America's considerable military might in way that the founders would be proud of. In a way that brings peace to the world instead of war. In a way in which they will still be alive! If you truly support the troops then you want them to come home with all of their limbs intact rather than to die in a pointless war that we should have never been in in the first place.

Neo-Libs At Daily Kos Smear Ron Paul

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

The Neo-Libs at Daily Kos made a post today about how Ron Paul is a racist. This attempted smear (read it here) is no different than the Swift-Boating of John Kerry or any other Neo-Con tactic. People that consider themselves liberal/progressive must realize that to blindly vote for someone because they have a "D" by their name is just as bad as the other side blindly voting for George W Bush because of his "R."

While DailyKos supports corporate controlled politicians like John Edwards they are making it their business to smear the only candidate with any chance (sorry Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel) who is actually speaking the truth about the biggest issues facing America. The only candidate talking about ending the War on Drugs. The only candidate talking about bringing home ALL of our troops.

Stop getting fooled by these careerist politicians. These lying power hungry slick politicians who will do nothing to truly change the direction of this country. It is time that both the "right" and the "left" wake up and realize that there's something far more important than hot button issues. There's peace and freedom. There is no candidate who stands up for a sensible foreign policy and for true freedom like Ron Paul. He is the true hope for conservatives and liberals who want their country back.

Specifically about the DailyKos "racist" smear, it's clear that Ron Paul is not a racist if you've ever listened to him speak. The words they are quoting are not Ron Paul's but a man named Dan Gannon. Why doesn't the DailyKos mention that the words they quote are not even his? Think about that. DailyKos is a group of people who is dedicated to the support of Democrats at any cost. Forget about party affiliation. Start thinking about peace and freedom affiliation. Which candidate is going to stand up stop wars and bring freedom to the people of this country? Ron Paul.

The Ron Paul Movement Makes Polls Irrelevant

Saturday, December 22, 2007

The mainstream media's precious polls have become entirely irrelevant in the race for the Republican nomination.

Why?

Ron Paul.

The following are the reasons why the polls that usually show Ron Paul in the single digits are going to be proven to be worthless when the Republican primary results starting coming in:

1. The polls count on predictable behavior where only certain people (2004 George W Bush voters) are going to show up to vote. This means that a majority of Ron Paul's supporters (Independents, disgruntled Republicans, Libertarians, & Democrats) are not even included in these polls.

2. Ron Paul has been left out of a lot of the polls. He's been hidden as "6 for other" in many of them. There have even been reports that when people select Ron Paul that they've been dropped from the polling database.

3. The polls do not consider the strength of support. Most supporters of the so called "mainstream" candidates such as Rudy Giuliani & Mitt Romney don't really believe in their chosen candidate. They know deep down that their candidate is nothing special and just represents "politics as usual." They know that these people will say anything to be elected. They usually support their chosen candidate based on very superficial reasoning that can be knocked down easily by any sort of logical questioning.

A. These soft supporters could easily be convinced to support someone else (like Ron Paul.) This is particularly important in caucus states.

B. These soft supporters are not as likely to actually go out and vote. This is particularly important if there is bad weather on the day of a primary election.

4. The polls do not take into account that many of the primaries are open. An open primary means you do not have to be a Republican to vote. This means that all of Ron Paul's independent and Democrat supporters will be able to vote.

5. Many Democrats and independents have changed party affiliation to Republican to be able to vote for Ron Paul in closed primary states. Of course these people are not included in the polls.

Because of all of this I predict that Ron Paul's supporters will do more than surprise the MSM in the upcoming primaries. I predict they will shock the MSM. I expect Ron Paul to win Iowa & New Hampshire.

Primary Info:

The following states have open primaries: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho (possibly closing?), Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Who Should Progressives Support In 2008?

Thursday, December 20, 2007

The perfect choice in a perfect world would be Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich. Unfortunately we do not live in such a perfect world. Neither Gravel or Kucinich have been able to make any real inroads in the lead up to the Democratic primaries. They have been deemed "unelectable" and as such it has become a self fulfilling prophecy thus it feels like a lost cause. What will it really prove if Kucinich gets 3% of the vote instead of 2%?

Liberals who fear losing another general election to a neocon Republican have told themselves that they must choose between the "mainstream" candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. The problem with these candidates is they are not true progressives. They are more "politics as usual" and while I think any of them would be a far better choice than Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, John McCain, or Mitt Romney that is not so much because of anything good about the Dem. candidates and more about just how bad the "mainstream" Republican candidates are.

Edwards has become the cause of a lot of liberals who feel that he has at least been talking a bit more in tune with what they believe even if his past actions haven't been so tuneful. One problem is that Edwards is moving to the left this primary season for political reasons, not because he has any real political conviction. Another big problem is that Edwards may be moving to the left but he's still far short of what the left really wants. He talks about bringing home troops from Iraq but he also talks about leaving troops in Iraq. I haven't heard him talk about bringing home our troops from around the world. His foreign policy would certainly be a huge improvement over George Bush's but it falls far short of Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, and Ron Paul's stances. They are the ones who are right on foreign policy. Foreign policy is a huge issue. It effects us in so many ways. Not only would Ron Paul's foreign policy save a lot of people's lives it would also save a huge amount of money. If you are an anti-war liberal you have to ask yourself why you are supporting someone like John Edwards or Barack Obama when they are so much weaker on the issue of foreign policy than is Ron Paul.

Civil Liberties is another huge issue among most liberals. Again why would you support someone like John Edwards who voted for the patriot act over Ron Paul who is the ultimate champion for civil liberties? I assume that you smoke (or have smoked) marijuana or you at least know someone who has. Edwards policies make you a CRIMINAL. Why would you support someone who thinks you are a criminal? He will not end the War on Drugs. He will not do anything to legalize marijuana. Edwards, Obama, and Clinton are all horribly weak on civil liberties.

As you may have gathered by now, I'm trying to convince liberals to drop the mainstream Democratic machine and join the Ron Paul revolution.

As a liberal myself I feel like I can hopefully convince others to join me.

I feel like to many liberals the two biggest issues in the world are foreign policy and civil liberties and there has been no candidate as strong as Ron Paul on these issues (who has a real shot at winning) in many many many years. I feel it would be a great mistake for us to bypass this possibility just because we do not agree with Paul on all issues.

One of the great things about what is happening with Ron Paul is that it is opening up debate. It is allowing people who have been controlled for years by hot button issues (both by Republicans and Democrats) to actually think rationally and logically about what is really important.

I want liberal voters to tell me why they are not supporting Ron Paul? Let's open up the dialog! Think about this. We could have a president who really believes in our freedoms! A president who really believes in a non interventionist foreign policy (otherwise known as PEACE.) The mainstream democrats are just more of the same. Our political system is CORRUPT! We cannot change it with a small move to the left. It's time for a real change.

Some issues that may be stopping you (a liberal) from supporting Ron Paul:

1. Abortion. The ultimate hot button issue! This has been used by both parties to control your vote for ages. Do you really think this is one of the most important issues facing our country? Yes Ron Paul is pro-life but he is not for federal anti-abortion legislation. He believes strongly in local Government which means in his perfect world each state would make that decision themselves. Yes if this were to happen we may end up with a situation where it's legal in some states and illegal in other states but do you really want to be controlled by that fear? Don't you see how Democrats control by this fear just like Republicans do (but with other issues?) Also consider that W is also pro-life and nothing has changed in the past 8 years. This is a "hot button" issue! We must look past this sort of stuff and look at the big picture. When we are starting unjust wars and losing our civil liberties we cannot continue to be blinded by this nonsense!

2. Health Care. While this is my 3rd biggest issue (after foreign policy and civil liberties) It is a distant 3rd in comparison. I do believe in Dennis Kucinich's plan for single payer health care. But I do not think that Edwards, Clinton's, or Obama's plans are going to be a great improvement over what we have now. If you look at how the health care problem has spiraled out of control you will see that it's only got worse with federal intervention. Also consider that in a Ron Paul world each state would be able to make the decision of having universal health care or not. If some states can show that it works well then perhaps eventually it would spread all over the country.

3. Gun Control. Interesting topic, but really, is this the issue you want to select the next president of the country over? It seems to me that we are allowing ourselves to be controlled when we vote on issues like this.

Liberals: Tell me why I am wrong! Explain to me why I am a traitor to the Democratic party!

I have voted straight Democrat my entire life but if the general election comes down to Ron Paul vs. insert name of politics as usual Democrat here I will vote for Ron Paul.

Let us have the peace and civil liberties that we deserve.

January 1, 2008 Ron Paul Money Bomb?

Monday, December 17, 2007

With the Iowa caucus being on January 3, a seemingly perfect day for another Ron Paul "Money Bomb" would be on January 1. This would cause there to be a media reaction to Ron Paul and get his name out there the day before the Iowa caucus.

It would also be a great way to start the new year for the Paul campaign.

If you support a non interventionist foreign policy (anti war, pro peace) and you believe in civil liberties (that all Americans should be free to do as they please unless they are harming someone else) then support Ron Paul by donating as much as you can on January 1, 2008.

Ron Paul Breaks The Single Day Presidential Fund Raising Record

Monday, December 17, 2007

On December 16, 2007 Ron Paul broke the single day presidential fund raising record that was held by John Kerry who raised $5.7 Million in a single day in 2004.

Ron Paul raised $6.04 million on 12/16/07 with contributions from over 58,000 donors including over 24,000 new donors.

Will the MSM continue to refer to Ron Paul as a "fringe" candidate now that he has broken the fund raising record in such an amazing way?

Ron Paul Passes $4 Million Today

Ron Paul's December 16 Tea Party is moving past the November 5th Money Bomb with 6 hours to spare. Now the question becomes how high can it go? $5 Million? $6 Million? If you want to help Ron Paul shatter every single day fund raising record in the books then donate now!

The current single day record is $5.7 Million by John Kerry in 2004. Claims by the Clinton and Romney campaigns that they raised over $6 Million in a day have been shown to be false. Also consider that Clinton and Romney raise their money by and large from large corporations and rich folks shelling out the maximum of $2,300. Ron Paul's big days are coming from regular people like you and me trying to take back our democracy.

Ron Paul's Tea Party - December 16, 2007

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Ron Paul has already raised over $11 million this quarter (which ends at the end of December) and looks to be a cinch to meet his campaign's fund raising goal of $12 million. You can see a running tally of Ron Paul's fund raising totals on his website here. He is the only candidate to have such a running tally available.

Ron Paul supporters are hoping to help him obliterate that goal with the "Ron Paul Tea Party" on Sunday, December 16th. The date is symbolic as it is the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party of 1773. The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the heavy taxation of Great Britain on the colonies and was instrumental in sparking the American Revolution.

Just like the $4.3 million "Money Bomb" on November 5th, this fund raising event has been organized entirely by Ron Paul's supporters, not his campaign.

The goal of the organizers of the Ron Paul Tea Party is high. They want to raise an unbelievable $10 million in a single day. If you want to show your support for civil liberties, fair taxation, and a non interventionist foreign policy then take part in what many Ron Paul supporters see as an historic occasion: Donate To The Ron Paul Campaign On December 16th.

In other Ron Paul news: Ron Paul is on PBS's NOW tomorrow night (Dec 14th.) In most markets the show will be on at 8:30 PM but you should check your local listings to make sure.

Why Vote For Someone Who Thinks You're A Criminal?

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

There are two democrats (Mike Gravel & Dennis Kucinich) and one republican (Ron Paul) running for president who are for the legalization of marijuana. If you are a marijuana smoker why would you even consider voting for anyone else? These are the only candidates who do not consider you a criminal for what you put in your own body.

Even if you do not currently smoke marijuana, perhaps you have tried it in the past. Probably you have friends and family who smoke marijuana or who have smoked marijuana. Do you truly feel that these people are CRIMINALS because of what they put in their own body?

There are millions of Americans who are marijuana smokers and many millions more who have smoked it or who have friends or family members who have done so. If these millions of people stand up for themselves and for their civil liberties and actually go out and vote for Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, or Mike Gravel perhaps things can begin to truly change for the better in this country.

They are counting on you being disinterested & uninformed! Wake up! Over 700,000 people are arrested in America every year for marijuana related offenses. This is an outrage! The government should not be allowed to tell us what we are allowed to smoke! There are *real* criminals out there who are a real danger to society.

The drug war is an incredible waste of money. Think of where the money spent on the drug war could be spent instead? Education, health care. What reason is there for a drug war? There is none.

Marijuana prohibition today is counter productive just like alcohol prohibition was in the 1920s. Prohibition creates crime by making something that reasonable people enjoy doing illegal. This not only makes citizens who are not doing anything wrong criminals, it also creates a criminal element to supply the needs of those that want the prohibited item.

On top of the fact that the drug war is a waste of money and counter productive it's also plain wrong and anti-American. It's wrong for the government to tell us what we can put in our bodies. It's wrong for people to be treated like criminals for doing nothing but smoking pot or growing a marijuana plant in their backyard.

End The War On Drugs: Vote For Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, or Mike Gravel.

EMail To CBS Evening News

Thursday, December 06, 2007

The following is an email I sent to CBS Evening News about their exclusion of Ron Paul & Dennis Kucinich from their new series on the presidential candidates.

***Send Your Own Email***

Hello,

Why are Ron Paul & Dennis Kucinich being excluded from your series on the candidates? The only candidates (other than Mike Gravel of course whom the MSM has already shut out) who offer any real alternative to a corporate controlled war mongering anti-civil liberties government?

I can understand that you may be able to make a reasonable argument that Kucinich does not have enough of a following to meet the criteria of being a "top candidate" but certainly Ron Paul does. Paul is most likely going to top all other Republicans for money raised in the fourth quarter. He recently set the record for most money raised in a single day and he is likely to top that record again on December 16th. Furthermore Ron Paul is easily the most searched candidate on the internet and his website receives far more traffic than any other candidate's website.

It's obvious that Ron Paul has a considerable following despite his low numbers in some national polls. It also must be noted that his name has been systematically removed from some of these national polls to make his support seem lower than it actually is. On top of that, much of Paul's support comes from independents and democrats who are not going to be polled in a Republican only poll. Paul is likely to be a serious challenger in all Republican primaries which allow non-registered Republicans to vote.

With the recent information that has come out about Iran in the NIE report it's clear that Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, and Mike Gravel have been the only candidates speaking any sense about that situation. All the other candidates have been on the wrong track.

It's clear that those in power do not want Ron Paul to be heard. Journalism should not be a tool of corporations. It should not be the tool of an elite class who benefit from a war mongering Government. The American people are hungry for real change and are tired of politics as usual.

Show some journalistic integrity. I'm sure some of you must have had some integrity at some point. Why did you get into journalism in the first place?

The "Ron Paul Revolution" is real. Stop ignoring it. Stop marginalizing it. Do your job and report on the real issues. Politics shouldn't be about some American Idol style popularity contest about who has a $400 haircut and who loves Jesus the most so on and so forth. This election is about who can stop the warmongering and who can bring the American people the freedoms that we deserve.

Thank You.

Ron Paul Tea Party On December 16, 2007

Sunday, December 02, 2007

If you believe in a non interventionist foreign policy abroad and your civil liberties here in America along with real tax reform then Donate as much money as you can to Ron Paul on December 16th of 2007.

The goal of Ron Paul supporters is to raise an incredible $10 Million on this single day, the Ron Paul "Tea Party." Held on this day as it is the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party of 1773.

The Boston Tea Party of 1773 was a protest of oppressive taxation by the British government on the colonies. The Ron Paul Tea Party of 2007 is a protest of the oppressive taxation of the American government on it's citizens. Ron Paul believes the IRS should be destroyed as it is a corrupt unnecessary system. He believes tax money should be spent much more thriftily, in particular when it comes to the wasteful spending on an imperialistic foreign policy which has American military bases all over the world. We can be taxed far less than we are now and still have a government that does everything that it needs to.

Sunday, December 02, 2007

Ron Paul received 182 of the 479 ballots cast for a 38% share to win the informal Republican straw poll last night. He easily outdistanced Fred Thompson who finished in second place at 23%.

Ron Paul 38%
Fred Thompson 23%
Mike Huckabee 11%
Rudy Guiliani 9%
Mitt Romney 9%
John McCain 5%
Duncan Hunter 4%
Tom Tancredo <1%

Ron Paul In The Primaries

Thursday, November 29, 2007

This is a very helpful website for figuring out whether your state has an open primary and if it is closed how long you have to change your registration to Republican to vote for Ron Paul. If your state is open then all Democrats and Independents can vote for Ron Paul in the Republican primary.

Usually Dems (and many Independents) wouldn't bother voting in a Republican primary, obviously this year things are different. Ron Paul offers a real hope for the future of this country. A real chance for true change in our foreign policy and a real chance to keep our civil liberties safe (and get some of the liberties that we should have but don't.)

If you are strongly against the war in Iraq you need to get out there and vote for Ron Paul in the Republican primaries. Ron Paul is far stronger anti-war than any of the mainstream Democrat candidates. The Democratic party is failing us (save Mike Gravel & Dennis Kucinich) it's time to jump ship. Ron Paul is our chance for a positive revolution in this country!

It's time to tell the mainstream media that we are tired of their lies. We are tired of their corporate politicians. We want our country back!

States With OPEN Primaries
(Get Out There And Vote For Ron Paul Regardless Of Your Party Affiliation)
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho (possibly closing?), Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

Remember if your state is not listed above CLICK HERE to see what the deadline is for changing your party affiliation to Republican.

Remember this country is a democracy. Just say NO to letting CNN and the rest of the mainstream media tell you who it is OK to vote for. Ron Paul stands up for YOU not for corporations. Not for the military industrial complex. He stands for YOU and your rights.

There's no reason to listen to the rest of the lying windbags running for president on the Republican side so here's just the questions from the YouTube/CNN debate from tonight that Ron Paul was asked to answer:

Do You Believe In A Conspiracy To Make A New Union?

What Are The Top Three Federal Programs You Would Cut?

Do You Support A "Fair Tax"?

Will You Pledge Never To Raise Taxes?

Will You Make A Permanent Commitment To The People Of Iraq?

How Can We Repair The Infrastructure Of America?

Mr. Paul, Are You Going To Run As An Independent?

More Are Searching For Ron Paul

Thursday, September 06, 2007

When comparing Ron Paul with the "front runner" Republican candidates in Google Trends you'll see that far more people are searching for Ron Paul than for Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, or John McCain.

Is this merely because he's unknown and people are curious? Even if that's the case, it's quite revealing the amount of interest that regular people are showing in Ron Paul. The things that Ron Paul is saying are striking a nerve with the people of America and they want to find out more. People want their civil liberties back. People want us to stop going to war for oil.

The amazing thing is how many people are displaying an interest in Ron Paul despite the fact that he's barely mentioned in the mainstream press compared to the other four Republican candidates that I mentioned.

Why is the mainstream press not following a candidate that obviously is exciting a lot of people?

Who Will Stand Up For Our Civil Liberties?

Wednesday, September 05, 2007

Which presidential candidates will stand up for our civil liberties? I think there should be no bigger issue than our civil liberties. Our civil liberties are what makes us free. They are the very basis of what it's supposed to mean to be in a free society. If we do not have them, then we are not free. This "freedom" that we supposedly have? It's nothing but an illusion.

Do you know what does not make us free? Do you know what has nothing to do with our freedom? Invading other countries to "install democracy." Spending billions of dollars for a bloated military that is largely unnecessary. Spending ridiculous amounts of money and resources on organizations like the DEA that do little more than harass the people of our country.

What is the biggest threat to our freedom? It's not "terrorists" and it's not definitely not Iraq. It's our own government. It's our government which jails people for doing things that should be protected by the constitution (smoking marijuana for an excellent example.) It's our government which is detaining people without giving them their rights because they are "suspected terrorists." It's our government which is tapping the phones of American citizens without a warrant!

So again I ask: Which presidential candidates will stand up for our civil liberties? Unfortunately the list is very short: Mike Gravel, Ron Paul, and Dennis Kucinich. Among the many reasons why these three candidates stand out from the crowd is that these are the only three candidates who have openly spoke out for the legalization of marijuana.

If you are not for the legalization of marijuana then you are part of an oppressive force against the very basic fabric of what it means to be an American. End Of Story. There is no reasonable argument that anyone can give that someone should be jailed for doing nothing more than smoking or growing marijuana. It should be every Americans right to put whatever they want into their own body and to grow whatever they want on their own property. If you are not hurting someone else, then you should be absolutely free to do whatever you want. What is the justification for marijuana being illegal while much more harmful & dangerous drugs are being sold every hour on television (pharmaceuticals)? When drugs like cigarettes & alcohol which are responsible for thousands of deaths every year are legal.

To be clear, I'm not advocating that these other drugs be illegal. Not at all. What I'm saying is what is the justification for the illegality of marijuana in a society where much more dangerous drugs are illegal. There is none. I cannot think of a better example of our civil liberties being trampled on than the "War on Drugs." The "War on Drugs" is a war on the American people.

These three candidates (Mike Gravel, Ron Paul, & Dennis Kucinich) are also the most strongly against the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act. If you are a true American then you know how despicable these things are. How much money they've wasted. How many innocent people's lives they've ended. And how many of our civil liberties have been taken away under the guise of "protecting us."

Why would even consider a lukewarm candidate that won't stand up for your rights and do what's right for America? Barack Obama? Hillary Clinton? John Edwards? Sure they are all a million times better than George W Bush or Rudolph Giuliani, but what is that saying? Is that really the standard that we judge candidates by? Don't we deserve more? This is supposed to be the land of the free.

America was founded on the ideals of freedom from tyranny and oppressive governments. Let us be truly American again, let us be truly free.

Learn more about these candidates that speak the truth and believe in your right to exercise your civil liberties:

Mike Gravel, Ron Paul, & Dennis Kucinich.

Ron Paul with Tucker Carlson

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Ron Paul's long shot candidacy seems to be picking up steam fast. Ron Paul's stance on foreign policy may be the strongest thing about his candidacy. It is something that is appealing to liberals and thinking conservatives alike (i.e. libertarians, not the brain washed bible beating followers of Dubya.) The current administration's policies have been a complete disaster and the other Republican candidates are by and large offering more of the same.

Here is Ron Paul in an interview with Tucker Carlson on MSNBC yesterday speaking on foreign policy. :

One thing I noted is that they listed Ron Paul as a "presidential hopeful" on the screen. Do they describe all candidates that way?

The Pros and Cons of Ron Paul

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

***Note I Am Editing This As On 12/15/07 Because I Think The Original Post Was Somewhat Uninformed & Biased Against Ron Paul***

Ron Paul, Republican candidate for president, has created quite a buzz with his anti-war anti-interventionist positions. He has also gained quite a bit of interest and support from liberals who would normally never even consider supporting a Republican. And it's precisely that, that I want to address here.

While I respect Ron Paul for speaking truthfully about the war in Iraq I do not think that his stances on other issues are right for America. I respectfully disagree with the tenants of Libertarianism.

I think that Ron Paul truly believes that Libertarianism is right for America and that he's doing the right thing. This puts him in stark contrast with most politicians who just say whatever they think needs to be said to get a vote today. He has integrity.

I also believe he is wrong. The simplest way to show this will be to look at his positions one by one:

PRO: Iraq War

"The war in Iraq was sold to us with false information. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies, the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them."

On this issue Ron Paul is right on the money.

The bigger picture is that Ron Paul wants to stop our interventionist foreign policy. He wants to bring home our troops all around the world which would not only save our country a huge amount of money (meaning we wouldn't have to pay so much in taxes) but I also believe this would help to make our country more safe. Regardless of the nonsense that neocons say we were not attacked on 9/11 because of our "freedoms" we were attacked on 9/11 because of our (at best) meddling foreign policy. If we stop trying to control the world, the world will stop being so pissed off at us. History shows that whenever an empire tries to grow too big that it just doesn't work.

CON: Health Care

Ron Paul is NOT for universal health care. As a Libertarian he would never support the government's involvement in health care. This is unfortunate because it's clear to me that something as basic as health care should be the realm of the government just as firemen and policemen are. Would we want a private company policing our streets? no of course not. So why do we place something as basic and important as our health in the hands of businessmen who have nothing but their profits in mind?

Ron Paul supporters have pointed out that states could create universal health care plans. These plans may be leaner (less wasted money) & more effective because of a smaller bureaucracy required to run them.

As a bleeding heart liberal I still like the idea of all Americans being covered with a single payer universal health care plan but I am willing to consider that it may not actually work best at the federal level. Perhaps once some states implement a universal health care plan and it is successful then other states would soon follow suit.

CON: Abortion

Ron Paul does not support the right of women to make their own choice about whether or not to have an abortion. He believes each state should have the ability to make their own law regarding abortion. If the states were to make their own abortion laws this would inevitable lead to most southern states making abortion illegal. This would bring us back to the dark ages before Roe. Why should a woman have the freedom of choice in New York but not in Georgia? All women in America deserve the right to make their own choices about their bodies. To me this should be considered a basic civil liberty that is protected at the federal level. That being said I am not willing to not support Ron Paul just because of the abortion issue. As voters we are too easily controlled by these sorts of hot button topics.

PRO: Privacy and Personal Liberty

Being a Libertarian (he ran as the Libertarian candidate for president in 1988) Paul is extremely strong on privacy & personal liberty issues. He voted against the horrible Patriot Act.

This is a huge huge issue. I'm tired of politicians (especially supposedly "liberal" democrats) who don't seem to really have any belief in the importance of our civil liberties.

PRO: Ending the War on Drugs

Paul favors the legalization of marijuana.

He voted against all federal employees being subject to random drug tests.

He sponsored the States' Rights to Medical Marijuana Act.

The War on Drugs is a horrible waste of tax payers money and is morally reprehensible. It is wrong to put people in jail for doing nothing but doing drugs. We should live in a free society where people can put whatever they want into their own bodies. The right to do drugs should be considered a basic civil liberty. It amazes me how many people have been fooled into thinking it's the governments business whether or not they should be allowed to smoke marijuana or snort cocaine.

CON: Education

Paul believes that the US Department of Education should be abolished. He thinks that all education decisions should be left up to the states, local governments, and personal decision. While this may seem like a reasonable position, in reality it will stretch the divide between the rich and the poor even further.

Every child in America should have the right to a good education. I believe education should become more federalized not less so. Why? Because right now children in rich districts (those with rich families) get a good education while those in poor districts (those with poor families) get a poor education. There must be more equality of opportunity in this country. All children whether poor or rich deserve a quality education. This is not only a matter of fairness to all Americans but a matter of national prosperity.

Ron Paul supporters point out that federal education system has been a failure. Most of the money spent goes towards the bureaucracy of the system and not to the actual schools. School performance has dropped since the federal government started becoming involved in education. Perhaps this is a matter best left up to the states? That being said I have a hard time thinking that it's OK for children in backwards states to not get a proper education. For example children who are taught that creationism is an alternative "theory" to evolution. That's just not OK, it really isn't. But that being said I'm not sure what a good solution is to this problem. I like the idea of all children all over the country getting an equal education but perhaps that's just too idealistic. Perhaps the federal government's involvement in education has actually been a hindrance and not a help?

CON: Environment/Climate Change

Libertarians such as Ron Paul believe in a free market to the highest degree. This means little if any governmental oversight. This means that big businesses would have even more power if Ron Paul had his way. Big business must have governmental oversight or they will absolutely trash our environment. With global warming a scientific fact this is an extremely important point.

Ron Paul supporters have pointed out that according to his beliefs people actually have a right to not be polluted so that he doesn't really believe that there should be no oversight of big business regarding the environment.

CON: He's against the United Nations.

While I agree with his non interventionist policy militarily the last thing America needs is to make more enemies internationally. The United Nations has done a lot of good for the world and we should be a positive part of that. Ron Paul wants America to pull out of the UN.

In Conclusion:

I think it's important that an anti-war candidate who is speaking the truth be supported in this election but Ron Paul is the wrong anti-war candidate to support. Instead of Paul consider Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, and possibly Al Gore if he enters the election and sticks to his guns. Not only have they been anti-war from the start but they also have solid positions on other important issues such as education and health care. The Iraq war is a very important issue but it is not the only one.

New Conclusion:

I've been thinking about this a lot since I originally wrote this article and I have changed my mind somewhat. While I still prefer Dennis Kucinich or Mike Gravel to Ron Paul, it's clear that their campaigns are not going anywhere fast. Liberals (as a group) are too scared of losing the general election again to even consider voting for the person they actually agree with on the issues (and that would definitely be one of those two) but instead are voting on "electability" and are supporting candidates such as Barack Obama and John Edwards.

Because of this Kucinich and Gravel have not been able to gain any significant footing heading into the primaries. Meanwhile Ron Paul's campaign has taken off. The "Ron Paul Revolution" appears to be a real phenomenon.

In other words I think I have become one of the progressive liberals I was originally writing about. I support Ron Paul despite not agreeing with him on everything. I think his stances on foreign policy and civil liberties are so strong (much much MUCH stronger than those of the mainstream Dem. candidates) that I feel I must support despite not being sure of his policies overall. I've also learned more about his ideas regarding the economy & IRS and I must say he makes a lot of sense. This country appears to be on the wrong track in many ways and I think just moving a little bit back to the left with someone like Edwards, Obama, or Clinton isn't going to be the shift necessary (although I would certainly support them over any of the other absolutely disgusting Republican candidates.) I think it's time for a real change.

The Ron Paul campaign has been so exciting because it has woken up so many Americans to what is really going on in this country. It has united people who normally would never agree on anything. It has people interested in politics who have never even bothered to vote before. It has people questioning the mainstream media and their ability to decide who our president should be for us.

With all that being said: Donate To Ron Paul (even if you don't agree with him on everything.)
