Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, & Mike Huckabee = Early 2012 GOP Frontrunners

According to this new Gallup poll the front runners for 2012 for the Republican Presidential nomination are Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, & Mike Huckabee. All three of these people played a big part in the 2008 contests so these results are no big surprise that they’re in front in such a poll but it also can’t be considered good news for the prospects of the Republican party that these three weak candidates are apparently the best they can do.

To make matters even worse, Newt Gingrich is in 4th in this poll! Seriously. Newt Gingrich is not exactly a fresh face, nor is he at all popular with the general public.

I think someone else is going to have to make a name for themselves in the next few years if the Republicans want to give President Obama any kind of real challenge in 2012 because these guys (and gal) are all exceedingly weak general election candidates because they are so distasteful to a large portion of the American populace.

To get an idea of how wide the gulf between Obama & these weak potential Republican candidates are, consider that Obama’s current approval rating is 58% (and that’s actually at the low end of where it’s been recently) while Sarah Palin is at 43%, Mike Huckabee at 42%, and Mitt Romney at 37%. While there’s not a 1 to 1 relationship between approval ratings and votes, it’s clear that Obama would beat any of these potential competitors by a wide margin in an election held today.

  1. it’s sad to think that, “is this the best they can offer” when it comes to candidates?

Huckabee is the only substantial one but he’s a religious nut.

  3. The next candidate hasn’t surfaced yet. This time I think we’re in for something different. They’re all gonna come out of the woodwork. I see Sean Hannity is even makin’ noises about running!

  4. Hannity! Ha. That guy is a complete loon. Is this really the state of the Republican party? It’s sad in a way that there’s only one party to choose. The way I see it, the Democratic party should be the right wing (with their current policies) and then a REAL liberal party should come in on the left… a party that works entirely in the interests of the American people (not in the interests of corporations) and which sets it’s policy based on reality, not on “conventional wisdom” or political expediency (ie: it’s way past time to legalize drugs.)

  5. Wealth and power are funny things. Everybody hates those that have them…..yet everybody wants to have some! Nobody, nobody, NOBODY works for the interests of the American people. Those in power will ALWAYS work for their own interests (democrat, republican, liberal, conservative, libertarian) having power is too intoxicating. We are entirely too willing to give up too much power to a small number of people that we willingly let rule over us as if they were royalty. Only when we decide that our representatives are 1. temporary not career office holders. 2.Are truly representative and not dictators and 3. Have no elite powers or compensation over that enjoyed by every other citizen. (temp jobs shouldn’t get lifetime pensions)(those in power should not be exempt from the very laws they impose on us). Only then do we have a chance to begin controlling our own destiny.
