Obama Expanding The Drug War (In Mexico)
By ThePresidentialCandidates.US on Apr 17, 2009 in Barack Obama
I strongly believe that the war on drugs should be ended and that all drugs should be legalized for a multitude of reasons (the most important one being civil liberty but two more great reasons are that evidence suggests that legalization would improve the economy and decrease violent crime rates.)
Right now the problem in Mexico is a great opportunity for America to reverse course and start getting sensible about drugs (i.e. legalizing.) Instead it looks like President Obama is going the opposite direction.
According to the story linked to above, Obama is asking Congress to provide money for Black Hawk helicopters and surveillance equipment Mexico has long sought for its drug war.
That’s not the way to go. Helicopters? Surveillance? No. Legalization, yes. The real way to topple the drug gangs in Mexico is to make selling drugs a profession just like any other. It’s the illegality of drugs that gives these gangs their leverage.
