President Obama With Huge Lead Over Sarah Palin In Potential Head To Head Match-Up

A new Marist poll of a potential head to head match-up between Sarah Palin (as the GOP nominee) and Barack Obama (running for his 2nd term) in the 2012 Presidential election has Obama way out ahead of Palin.

Overall: Obama 56%, Palin 33%, Undecided 11%
Democrats: Obama 92%, Palin 4%, Undecided 4%
Republicans: Obama 20%, Palin 73%, Undecided 7%
Independents: Obama 49%, Palin 34%, Undecided 17%

These huge blowout general election numbers for Obama against Palin have to be particularly concerning for Republicans when you look at the Marist numbers for the Republican nomination: Mitt Romney 21%, Sarah Palin 20%, Mike Huckabee 19%.

You should also consider that Obama’s approval ratings are currently about as low as they’ve been, yet he’s still up by 23 points over someone who appears to be a front-runner for the GOP nomination. It’s still very early, but as of right now 2012 looks like a potential disaster for the Republicans.

  1. Another angle I just thought of:

Imagine if Huckabee decides not to run… Most of his votes would go to Palin. As of right now she looks like she has a legitimate shot at the Republican nomination. This is a nightmare scenario for the GOP.

I think if it comes down to that the establishment of the Republican party will do everything they can to destroy Palin, which will in turn infuriate her voters and make them not want to support Romney if he ends up as the nominee.
