RIP Senator Ted Kennedy

Ted Kennedy died tonight at the age of 77. While it is not a great surprise since Kennedy has been battling brain cancer for quite some time now, it is still a major loss as Kennedy has been one of the few Senators who has been willing to stand up for what’s right recently. Maybe his death will shame some of his former colleagues into finally getting their act together.

Kennedy proposed a single payer universal health care system in 1971. Instead we went with Richard Nixon’s private insurance company boosting plan which has lead directly to the broken health care system we have today.

Kennedy was right then and he was right to support President Obama’s attempts at health care reform in 2009.

The best way to pay tribute to Senator Kennedy would be to finally pass real health care reform (including a public option) because Kennedy spent so much of his life fighting for it.
