Ron Paul & Mike Huckabee Win A Combined 27% In Pennsylvania
By ThePresidentialCandidates.US on Apr 23, 2008 in John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul
Very little attention has been paid to the GOP results since John McCain was crowned the presumptive nominee pf his party but there were some pretty interesting results in the Republican primary in Pennsylvania yesterday (yes the Republicans held a vote yesterday as well.)
Despite McCain being the presumptive nominee, 27% of the Republicans who bothered to vote yesterday voted for someone else. 16% of those voted for Ron Paul (who is still officially running for president) and 11% of those voted for Mike Huckabee (who suspended his campaign some time ago.)
With all the talk of the Democrats being a fractured party due to the drawn out contest between Obama & Clinton, how about the fact that McCain can only win 73% in his own party even when he’s already been crowned the winner? There are still a lot of social conservatives (Huckabee supporters) and fiscal conservatives/anti-war Republicans (Paul supporters) who can’t stand McCain who they see as both being liberal on social & fiscal issues and flat out wrong on foreign policy (McCain is tied to the Iraq war as much as anyone is at this point.)

Isn’t that a fun little fact about McCain’s results? And I haven’t seen one media outlet mention it.
I have to confess that had I been voting in the PA primary I would have voted for Ron Paul. Not that I actually support Paul, mind you, it’s just that I can’t stand John McCain. (Here in the Florida primary I voted for Mitt Romney, not that I actually support Romney, mind you. Heh. I just thought he had the best chance at that point of beating McCain.)
Whether or not I vote for McCain in the general election will depend largely upon who he picks as his VP. It would have to be a BRILLIANT pick at this point (one that I’m not smart enough to forsee) to sway me to his side but I suppose it’s still possible.
