The Democrats 3 Way Race Tightens Up In Iowa

The latest Iowa Reuters/C-Span/Zogby daily tracking poll shows the distance between Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards shrinking. Clinton is on top at 30% and Obama and Edwards are tied for second at 26%. This 4% gap between Clinton and Edwards closed 3 points from the previous day’s tracking of a 7% gap (31% to 24%)

This is great news for the John Edwards campaign which would get a huge boost from winning Iowa.

The race is close enough that it could come down to who is most organized. Especially considering the strangeness of how the Democrats Iowa caucus works. Many have reported that Edwards has the best organization in the state, we’ll see if that pays off on January 3.

To explain a bit of what I mean by the strangeness of the Democrats Iowa caucus proceedings: If a candidate at a caucus location has less than 15% of the vote then members who support other candidates can try to convince those supporters to join their cause. If those that support candidates with less than 15% of the vote do not select a new candidate then their vote is essentially not counted. Bill Richardson and Joe Biden are both polling at 5% so who their supporters choose as their second choice could end up deciding who wins Iowa.

In case you are wondering, the Republican side does not do things the same way. Their Iowa caucus consists of a simple vote.
