The Public Option Has Majority American Support

Media Matters makes the point that the mainstream media has been skewing the debate on health care reform by insinuating that the “public option” that President Obama supports is not popular with Americans and that the “public option” is the “liberal position” (it’s not, it is a compromise, the true liberal position is “single payer.”)

The public option gives the American people the choice of sticking with the health insurance that they have now or choosing a government run health insurance program. This is essential for giving the health insurance companies competition so that they can no longer gouge their customers (health insurance premiums have been skyrocketing.) It will lower overall health care costs while providing high quality insurance for many more Americans.

A couple of the many polls the have shown that a majority of Americans support the public option:

Quinnipiac: 62% support “public option.”

NY Times/CBS News: 66% support a “government administered plan.”

It’s most impressive that a majority of Americans support this considering the massive amount of lies and misinformation being spread by the right wing (health insurance industry sponsored) politicians and PR firms. The White House is now trying to correct those lies but sadly many Americans are now ingrained into fighting against their own self interest in favor of fighting for billions of dollars in health insurance industry profits (and that’s what fighting against health care reform boils down to.)

  1. It reminds me when one of my American’s friend came to visit me in France. He has been bitten by a wasp and is allergic to it. He went to the hospital and his only worry was the bill he would have to pay. So I said “What are you talking about?”. He was very surprised to leave the hospital without having anything to pay.

The only problem with this system is that people take advantage of it and go to the hospital for nothing or ask for drugs where they get the money back even if they don’t really need it.
