There Is Hope In The Future

It’s sad to see so many people buying into the lies of the Republican party (and at this point it’s become clear to anyone following what’s going on that everything the Republicans say is a lie – they only care about hurting Obama politically, not about helping the country.)

But within that sadness there is hope. The young people of America are not buying it. Their grandparents may be buying it, but they aren’t. The Republican party now appeals only to old ignorant white people. That’s it. That’s their entire demographic. Certainly there are a lot of old ignorant white people but the good thing is, they make up a smaller percentage of the population every single day.

Where am I finding this hope? In the crosstabs of the latest Research 2000 poll.

Favorability of President Obama by Age

18-29: 87%
30-44: 41%
45-59: 66%
60+: 39%

It’s the 87% from 18 to 29 that gives me the most hope (especially in comparison to the 39% of the 60+ age group.)

On the other hand I find the 30-44 and the 45-59 results very confusing (and I went back to previous weeks of this poll and this pattern is clear week after week.) I’m actually in the 30-44 demographic myself and I’m a bit embarrassed of my age group. I’m assuming it’s mostly folks in the older half of this age group who have fond memories of Ronald Reagan?

Why it be that people born from 1966 through 1980 would have such a lower opinion of the President than those born from 1951 through 1965? I really don’t know what would explain it. I would love to hear some opinions on this in the comments.

But my point is; the young people get it. Those that have grown up with the internet. Those that can look up the lies of the Republicans and see for themselves what the truth is. They are not getting fooled. And I see great hope in that. Our country will move past the idiocy of the tea baggers and the lies of Sarah Palin, Mitch McConnell, and the rest of the GOP liars. It will be a struggle but we will make progress eventually!

  1. You wonder why the poll you have taken fails to make sense, consider this. The current President is not a Liberal but a Conservative. This is why my age group 45-59 approve of him because we can see the truth. Your poll should really be about congress not the popularity of a sitting President as he has zero to do with the laws of the land. If you will notice the country is finally taking somewhat of a stand against the current congress which consists of both Dems and Repubs which are all liars and thieves!

  2. I think your analysis is critically flawed by assuming that people keep the same political views throughout their lives. I would like to see you at least try to address the likelihood of this happening. Just because you are a liberal when you are 20 doesn’t mean you will be when you are 60.

Example: Someone who protested the Vietnam war might now want their healthcare to stay the same because they can afford it and don’t want to risk the quality of health care going down, whether it actually would or wouldn’t. People are stupid enough to be swung by some scare mongering.

  3. joe – I agree that there is some swing in beliefs as people get older – often people become more conservative as they get older. I do agree with that.

But I do not think that explains this because the age group of 18 to 29 has become increasingly liberal over the course of George W. Bush’s presidency. I think these people have been turned off to “conservatism” for a life time. Or at least I hope they have.

  4. The new poll for this week is out and I’ve come across something else that is pretty amazing. The differences by region are so extreme it’s almost as if the northeast and the south are two separate countries living in different realities.

    Obama Favorable Rating:

    Northeast: 89%
    South: 26%
    Midwest: 61%
    West: 59%

The ignorant south is really dragging our country down.
