West Virginia’s Robert Byrd Endorses Barack Obama
By ThePresidentialCandidates.US on May 19, 2008 in Barack Obama
91 year old Robert Byrd of West Virginia is Washington’s longest serving Senator as he’s held his position since 1959. He’s also the oldest living member of the Senate.
Byrd endorsed Barack Obama for President today. What makes this endorsement so noteworthy is not that he’s going against the grain of his state (which backed Hillary Clinton overwhelmingly) but that he is a former KKK member endorsing a black man for President. Certainly the symbolism is perfect for Barack Obama’s campaign for President which represents a new beginning, new hope for America.
From Byrd’s endorsement: “Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support.”
For more background on Robert Byrd read his Wiki article here. It must be noted that he is extremely regretful of his time as a KKK member in the 1940s as a young man.
