Win The “War On Drugs” By Decriminalizing Drugs

That’s what Portugal did. They decriminalized the use of all drugs in 2001 and they’ve seen drug use rates drop in the last 8 years since the policy has been put in place.
Making drug users into “criminals” hasn’t worked. A person who chooses to smoke marijuana or snort cocaine shouldn’t be considered a criminal anymore than someone who chooses to drink beer or wine.
It’s time for America to have a sensible policy towards drug use.
Drug abuse should be considered a health concern just like alcohol abuse is considered a health concern. On the other hand, moderate recreational drug use shouldn’t be considered anymore of an issue than moderate recreational alcohol use in most cases (marijuana, psychedelic drugs, cocaine.)
There may be some exceptions to that such as with meth or heroin (really destructive addictive drugs) but those exceptions should be made entirely based on scientific reasoning, not some political moralization nonsense. And even in these cases the users of such drugs should not be considered criminals but simply people with an addiction problem.
The idea that people who use drugs are “criminals” is flat out ridiculous. A criminal is someone who harms other people in some way. A criminal is not someone who chooses to take a substance that isn’t considered socially acceptable. “Big Brother” has really overstepped it’s boundaries when it comes to drug laws.
